Cultivating A Thankful Heart

It has been a tough few years with each going through our own journey of joy and pain throughout 2020 and 2021. It is hard to believe that it already November and Thanksgiving is quickly approaching in the US.   For the weeks leading up to Thanksgiving we want to focus on developing a heart of gratitude.

Take a moment to pause, take a deep breath, and remember. Numerous times in Scripture God tells us to remember who He is and what He has done. Remembering what God has done for us fosters a heart of thankfulness and helps us to trust His faithfulness for the future. Remembering also helps us cultivate a heart of love and gratitude for those around us.

Reflect back on 2021. What are you grateful for this year? How has God shown Himself to you this year? Reflect on every person for whom you are grateful and for what you are grateful. Perhaps you want to write a list of gratitude

Now turn those answers into a time of thanksgiving and praise. Each person’s list will look different. Use the list below as a starting point.

Father, from whom every family on earth is named, we give thanks-
for time together as a family
for our continuing love relationship with You through Jesus
for our love relationship with each other
for life, health, bright minds, and physical safety
for food, clothing, a comfortable house, a clean bed
for enjoying being together with laughter
for the uniqueness of each one
for the rock of strength that prayer is for us
for faithful friends who encourage us by praying for our family
for seeing Your hand of grace at work in our lives as we experience more of You
for Your plan for our lives
for weaknesses through which You shows Yourself strong in us
for wisdom and guidance in daily circumstances
for strength for daily demands of job and family
for hope, peace, victory, satisfaction, and fulfillment
for financial blessings
for spiritual strength in spiritual battles
for Your patience in the testing, struggles, and refining that we grow through
for Jesus’ sufficiency for today’s grace
for forgiveness received and forgiveness extended
for hearts of obedience
for more than we could ever deserve!
