Last year on August 21st a historic solar eclipse occurred over the United States. God was awesomely on display, the heavens were telling His glory. We were not in the part of the country that experienced a total eclipse. We only experienced 93%. At the height of the action, a confused deer ran across the street, and the cicadas started singing their sunset chorus. The temperature dropped noticeably, and the light level declined, resulting in a lukewarm atmosphere unlike our usual searing August heat.
When the light of God’s holiness is dimmed in human hearts, we have an “eclipse of the heart.” Even a 93% partial eclipse affected the environment. The same is true of our hearts. When we are darkened and desensitized to God’s holy light, we cannot reflect Him. Romans 1:21 says “For although they knew God, they neither glorified Him as God nor gave thanks to Him, but their thinking became futile and their foolish hearts were darkened.” Ephesians 4:18 says “They are darkened in their understanding and separated from the life of God because of the ignorance that is in them due to the hardening of their hearts.” I desire a heart free from any eclipse.
When the light of God is diminished in us, our hearts are hardened and our understanding is darkened. Darkness overshadows His light and dampens the fire of His Spirit in and through our lives. We become less effective in shining the fullness of His Presence when we allow darkness to overshadow us.
Is there anything eclipsing your view of the Son?
God desires so much more for us. Isaiah 60:1 says “Arise and shine, for your light has come, and the glory of the Lord has risen upon you.” We are made to arise and shine and carry His glory light. And to do so our heart must be aligned with Him.
God, please search our hearts and show us anything that is eclipsing the reflection of You in us. Bring us into complete alignment with you, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, so that we may reflect Your glory!
